None of this is independently verified, and buyers know it.
When we asked our 50 interviewees what information would actually help them compare studios, the answers were remarkably consistent. Eighty-two percent wanted to see the actual tools and software a studio uses in production - not a capability list, but specific tools integrated into specific workflows. Seventy-six percent wanted realistic budget ranges rather than the "starting from" figures designed to get them on a discovery call. Sixty-eight percent wanted to see turnaround times on comparable projects. And ninety-one percent - the highest-scoring response - wanted some form of independent verification that the studio's claims were accurate.
The number one complaint from buyers was not about finding studios - it was about trusting what they found. Every directory lets studios write their own profiles, choose their own categories, and self-report their capabilities. Buyers know this, and it makes the entire discovery process feel unreliable. The trust problem has specific, measurable consequences. Thirty-eight of our 50 interviewees said they had been burned by a studio that oversold its capabilities during the sales process. The most common scenario was a studio claiming expertise in a specific area - AI integration, product design, a particular industry - that turned out to be one project done three years ago by someone who no longer works there. The directory listing said "specialises in AI-powered product design" and the buyer had no way to verify that claim before committing budget.

One marketing director told us she hired a studio based on three stunning portfolio pieces, only to discover those were from a period when the studio had a creative director who left eighteen months ago. When we analysed what separated successful agency engagements from failed ones across our interview sample, five data points emerged as the strongest predictors of a good outcome. None of them are prominently featured on any existing directory.
First, tool stack transparency. Buyers who knew exactly which tools a studio used and how those tools fit into the production workflow were significantly more likely to report satisfaction with the engagement. Second, team stability. Studios where the same people who pitched the work also delivered it had dramatically higher satisfaction scores. Buyers who asked to meet the delivery team before signing reported better outcomes than those who did not.
Third, timeline evidence from comparable projects. Buyers who saw documented timelines from projects similar to theirs could set realistic expectations and hold the studio accountable. Buyers who relied on the studio's verbal estimates were frequently disappointed.
Fourth, pricing clarity. Studios that provided clear, specific pricing - whether fixed-fee, sprint-based, or retainer - had higher satisfaction scores than studios that quoted loosely and adjusted later. These five predictors share a common thread - they are all factual and verifiable. Unlike subjective signals like "I liked their vibe" or "their portfolio looked impressive," these data points can be checked, compared, and evaluated objectively. That objectivity is exactly what current directories fail to provide because their business model depends on agencies presenting themselves in the most favourable light rather than the most accurate one.
According to a 2025 Hinge Marketing study, 67 percent of professional services buyers find their provider through personal referrals. Directories ranked fifth behind referrals, Google search, events, and content marketing. That ranking is damning for an industry that has raised hundreds of millions in venture capital to build buyer-facing platforms.
Referrals work because they solve the trust problem that directories cannot. When a trusted colleague tells you "we used this studio and they were brilliant," that recommendation carries implicit verification. But referrals have serious limitations.
