Glossary

Plain-English definitions of the terms StudioRank uses across the directory, the rankings, and our methodology. Definitions are deliberately short and decision-useful rather than exhaustive.

AI Verified

A status assigned by StudioRank to design studios whose use of AI tools in production has been independently confirmed.

AI Verified is an editorial badge applied to design studios after they pass a structured evidence check. The check looks at three signals: explicit AI workflow descriptions on the studio's own website, AI-fluent roles in active job listings, and tool stack signals (Cursor, Claude, v0, Figma AI, Midjourney) traced through documented client work. Marketing claims alone do not qualify. The status is reviewed every 90 days and can be revoked.

AI-native studio

A design studio that integrates AI tools into core production from the outset, rather than bolting them on to legacy workflows.

An AI-native studio treats large language models, generative tooling and AI-assisted design as a default part of the production pipeline. The defining characteristic is structural - AI shapes how the team prototypes, writes, designs and ships, not just how it pitches. The opposite is an AI-adjacent studio, which uses AI tools occasionally without changing the underlying process.

Verification score

A 0-100 number representing the depth of a studio's AI tool adoption across team, process and client work.

The verification score is StudioRank's quantitative measure of AI integration. It weights production evidence (case studies, live work) above team adoption (job listings, internal posts) above marketing volume. The score is the basis for ranking in /rankings and for filtering in the directory. There is no path to a higher score through payment or sponsorship.

Vibe coding

A workflow where designers and product builders describe what they want in natural language and an AI assistant generates working code in response.

Vibe coding describes the practice of building interactive prototypes or production code by conversing with an AI tool (such as Claude, Cursor, v0 or Lovable) rather than writing every line by hand. The designer holds the intent and aesthetic; the AI handles syntax, scaffolding and routine implementation. The term was popularised in 2025 and is now a discrete service category on StudioRank.

Vibe coding agency

An agency that builds production software primarily through AI-assisted coding workflows rather than traditional hand-written code.

A vibe coding agency packages the vibe coding workflow as a service. Teams typically combine a designer-engineer hybrid with an AI tool stack to ship faster than conventional agencies. Output ranges from interactive prototypes to full production apps. The category overlaps with AI product design but is distinguished by an end-to-end build deliverable, not just design files.

AI product design

Design work for digital products where AI tools materially shape research, prototyping and iteration.

AI product design is the practice of using AI tools throughout the product design cycle - synthesising research with LLMs, generating prototypes with v0 or Lovable, accelerating visual design with Figma AI or Midjourney. The defining shift is compressed iteration speed. Engagements that once took weeks now move in days. AI product design overlaps with vibe coding but emphasises design craft and decision-making rather than build output.
